Purification: Today, DNA and RNA exaction and purification is readily performed using any one of a number of commercially available kits.
PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction): PCR is a rapid technique for accurately amplifying specific segments of DNA. PCR is performed in vitro and as such it does not suffer from many of the limitations of in vivo techniques. There are now many forms of PCR for performing a wide array of genetic manipulations (e.g. RT-PCR, RACE, methylation-specific). PCR is commonly used in medicine (e.g. disease detection) and forensics (e.g. DNA fingerprinting) in addition to basic research (e.g. gene cloning).
