Immunophenotyping: Immunophenotyping is the analysis of a heterogeneous cell population for the presence and/or proportion of the cell subpopulations of interest. Essentially, cells are stained with fluorescently-labeled, cell-specific monoclonal antibodies and characterized by flow cytometry. Immunophenotyping is used in the diagnosis of leukemia and Lymphoma and in monitoring the progression of AIDS.

Cell Counting: Typically, analysis by flow cytometry provides the proportion of the total cell population accounted for by a particular sub-population. For example, CD4+ T cells account for 44% of the patient’s total lymphocyte count. However, by careful use of fluorescent beads of known concentration, an absolute cell count can also be provided.
